PROMENADERS
Collaboration with writer Sarah Simpkin
Pandemic lockdown, 2020
SS: I’ve also been thinking about our daily walks - it reminds of the promenade, the idea that people used to dress up in their finery and go out on parade. I’ve started to put make up on for a walk if we all go after dinner, maybe a dress. I found a lovely old photo of my grandma dressed up to the nines pushing a pram along the seafront. Do you think there is a possible collaboration we could do in that? A performance piece, a photo project, or some writing?

ND: We're going out for walks but I'm not sure it's promenading. Are you able to audio record? It might be good for us each to go out for a walk and record our thoughts, swap and listen to each other's thoughts on another walk.. and go from there? We could also do that with conversations as couples while we walk, and then swap as above? D. and I have some of our best conversations while we're out walking and I enjoy them very much... there's a looseness to them that's hard to replicate at home.
SS: I’m still thinking about the promenade. Not sure what audio I could record with just a phone, but I like the idea – what would you use? We have very meandering conversations too. When we used to have our walks before W. we often fell into a pattern of grumbling, but in a really satisfying, circular way.
ND: Well, here is "PROMENADERS" - a sound piece using your lovely voices. I would recommend listening on headphones (if played on speakers it's better really loud, but as you are in a flat that's not fair on the neighbours)
