I am searching for something hard to see: the steady mutation of knowledge into information; imagination and curiosity ebbing away _ I look for ways to imply volume, to retain light and air; to distance myself from the screen (an image of space, never space itself) _ I watch for constraints on body and mind, individual and society _ Tensions shape the work: rhythmic and irregular, earnest and expendable, archival and ephemeral, moving between expression and echo, there is always a twist _ I picture vulnerable or transient forms, persistent and unstable acts; the nature of ideas and how time shapes them; the other side of the story, which is not a story; category errors; fragments; bruises; overlooked habits, undervalued moods and unexpected steps
Recent highlights include exhibitions/performances at: The Grundy, Blackpool, UK; Echo Echo, Derry, NI (with Ailís Ní Ríain); Backlit, Nottingham, UK; Corte Super Nova, Venice, IT; Leeds Arts University, UK; Oriel Davies, Wales; The Portico, Manchester, UK; International 3, Salford, UK; MOSTYN, Wales; Turner Contemporary, Margate, UK; Manchester Central Library, UK; Open Eye, Liverpool, UK and The Whitworth, Manchester, UK. I have completed residencies with The University of Manchester, UK; Lazio Museums Centre, Rome, IT; Standpoint Futures, London, UK; Atlantic Center for the Arts, Florida, USA and Shanghai College of Fine Arts, China amongst others. The inter-disciplinary nature of my work leads to a variety of collaborations – currently with Adam Smyth, Professor of English Literature and the History of the Book (Oxford). Previous collaborations include composer/plawright Ailís Ní Ríain; art historian Sara Riccardi; choreographer/dancer Chloe Aligianni; writer/critic Michael Hampton and photographer Stephen Iles.
